Tree and shrubs can fill a fall landscape with gorgeous color or provide boundary delineation, windbreaks, privacy, fruit for your table, or evergreen boughs for holiday decorations. Planting a tree, shrub or perrenial plant for any need is rewarded on at least 2 levels: 1) The beauty of our environment is enhanced and 2) The tree helps provide for a cleaner atmosphere.

Ignore the Tall in Back Rule
Most planting and design articles and resources about planting and perennial gardening will tell you that the general rule for organizing plants is “tall plants in back, short plants in front.” While that holds some truth, if you adhere to that rule all of the time, you will have a very boring exterior green space. A better rule: arrange plants so that they look like waves in an ocean. Staggering plants will give your garden more depth and texture. Also, putting some tall plants in the middle of medium-height plants will provide natural support for the tall plants as your space matures. Tall, airy plants like dill and fennel are great for creating dimension, not mension if you get the herb variety handy to have in the kitchen. If you have a prize specimen that is very short, of course you will want to put it in front. Otherwise, plant placement and height in your perennial garden is about flow.

Different Plant Textures
A whole bed filled with impatiens might be pretty at the entrance of a shopping mall, but it isn’t so interesting in your residential space. Your beds and softscapes will look best if you incorporate a variety of plant textures. If the plant is in flower most of the season, and the flowers are large or showy, they are what contributes to texture. If the plant flowers only once and the leaves are the prominent feature, look to the leaves for the plant’s texture. For example, though a hosta flowers, its leaves are its dominant feature. They are large and relatively smooth. A good contrast to a hosta would be a Mexican salvia plant that has narrow, textured leaves.

Incorporate fruits and vegetables into your beds for organic harvest.

Eat Organic, and actually Save!
Going Organic in your produce and food selections is not just popular these days, it is critical to good and long-term health. But purchasing organic vegetables and fruits can be quite costly. A growing trend, even in suburban neighborhoods, is to incorporate fruit and vegetable plants into the flower beds and softscapes surrounding the home. There are a great many vegetables and fruits that provide the same benefits as "traditional" plant material with the added benefit of actually producing a crop! You get the benefit of organic vegetables and fruits, you save money at the grocery store and you save money by utilizing these cheaper plants as "filler" for your beds and softscapes. A true Win Win!

PLANTING CARE & TIPS
Deadhead the Plants
Extending the life of your perennial flowers is accomplished by "deadheading" them. This is the process of removing the dead blossoms after they bloom before they go to seed. This encourages a longer bloom in plants like Shasta daisies and coreopsis if you deadhead them. If you want the plants to spread, let them go to seed at the end of the season. If you do not want certain plants to spread via seed, you will need to deadhead those as well.
Use Slow-Release Fertilizer
Overfeeding perennials will cause them to get weak. Liquid fertilizers are notorious for this. A better alternative is to use either a granular slow-release fertilizer or compost, which is the original, natural slow-release fertilizer. Utilizing either of these fertilizers will provide healthier plants and better looking beds and softscapes.
