TIPS AND INFO
The deeper the topsoil in your yard the healther it will be, which means the less involved you will have to be. A lawn with 12 inches of topsoil will require less water, and almost no treatments to keep weed free.
![]()
Mow high (3 -4 inches) and often. This will prevent sunlight from reaching germinating weeds. Additionally, the grass will not need to spend its time growing blades to be able to produce more sugar and will use it resources to create more shoots, thickening the turf and choking out weeds.
![]()
Water your lawn heavily but infrequently. If you find that you get mushrooms or molds or mildew in your lawn than you should only water when your lawn shows signs of distress.
![]()
When mowing, be sure to leave the clippings on the lawn. It adds organic matter and nutrients back into the soil. If you don't leave the clippings, your soil will begin to look more like "dirt" than soil.
![]()
Aerate your lawn either in the Spring or Fall, or both. Aeration is the number one thing you can do to achieve a healthy lawn the organic way.
![]()
After core aeration, leave the plugs on the grass and allow them to dry out, then rake the plugs into the grass if you like. It's OK if you don't as they will break up after the first mowing and help to breakdown thatch by providing micro organisms that will feed on thatch.
![]()
If you don’t aerate your lawn’s soil, your grass roots will tend to weave themselves into each other instead of growing downward into the soil.
